Oct 23, 2023 - Why Kenya is Africa`s renewable energy superpower

Kenya is emerging as a shining example of renewable energy leadership in Africa, marking a remarkable shift in the continent`s energy landscape. The nation`s commitment to sustainability is evident in its achievements, with a remarkable 81 percent of its electricity generated from low-carbon sources, including geothermal, hydro, wind, and solar power. This is a significant feat, especially in a region where many countries rely heavily on fossil fuels. At the core of Kenya`s success is its rich geothermal potential, with over half of the country`s low-carbon electricity coming from geothermal sources. The Olkaria Geothermal Project in the Great Rift Valley is a testament to Kenya`s prowess, set to provide around 27 percent of the country`s total energy demand, making Kenya the eighth-largest global geothermal energy producer.
