May 23, 2026 - Are air batteries a good solution for energy storage?

With renewables on the rise, many companies are looking at novel and cheap ways to store the energy for use when the wind isn`t blowing and the sun isn`t shining.
Lithium-ion is the gold-standard for short-term storage, however, over time this method becomes ever-more costly and inefficient.
Technologies like Hydroelectric are great for storing energy long-term, but not so good for shorter durations.
Now companies are turning to air storage or CAES to plug that mid-term gap. But how does it work and what problems still need to be solved before this technology can scale?
